Jack and Kim were out in the living room of the apartment, deciding on music. It was their turn to do the weekend cleaning. They needed a good soundtrack.
Their roommate Cliff was running around gathering some things for a day of hiking and nature. He burst into the room with binocs and a camera around his neck, wearing a straw hat and a backpack, with an armful of items from the storage closet in the basement of the apartment building.
“Are you going for a hike or are you moving out?” Jack asks. “That’s a lot of stuff.”
“I saw so many things I had down there that I forgot about. I wanted to bring them up and go through them. Later though.” Cliff says.
“What should we listen to while we clean?” Kim asks Cliff for suggestions.
“I have no idea what you guys are listening to. I still listen to the stuff I liked when I was your age.” Cliff says.
“You’re only about 10 years older than we are, it can’t be that different.” Kim says.
“Yeah Cliff, what’s your favorite music anyway?” Jack asks him.
“Same as yours will be.” He answers.
“But we don’t even know what yours is.” Kim says. “Besides, I never hear you playing any of the same type of music we listen to.”
“Doesn’t matter.” Cliff says. “Everyone’s favorite music is the same. Everyone has the same favorite music.”
“That makes no sense.” Jack says
Cliff explains. “Ten years from now, you’ll be listening to the same thing I’m listening to, which is what I was listening to ten years ago.”
“What? That’s crazy, how can you even say that. It’s really making less sense the more you try to explain what you mean.” Jack says.
“I think what he’s saying.” Kim says. “Is everyone’s favorite music is the stuff they listened to when they were having the best time of their lives, like when they’re young and out on their own for the first time.”
“Precisely.” Cliff says.
